Worth a reservation for the combination of cocktails, city views and a crowd that gives you plenty to watch before dinner.

Bangkok Jam; an Espresso Martini for a familiar alternative

Make the reservation. Just don’t make it the night.

Z Bar feels higher than it is. The openness of the terrace puts Chicago around you, with the cityscape extending beyond Michigan Avenue and little sense of looking out through a frame. It is a good setting for the first drink of the evening, particularly when the weather gives you a reason to stay outside.

The view is only part of the attraction. A fashionable crowd supplies much of the entertainment, and the room gives you as much to watch as the skyline. Dress for it. Z Bar sits comfortably between luxury hotel bar, rooftop lounge and the opening moments of a night out.

Terrace first, with a good alternative inside

Make a reservation if Z Bar is part of the plan, especially in warm weather. Arriving without one can leave you searching for a desirable table or space at the counter. A terrace table is the first choice, giving a group the fullest sense of the city around it.

Inside holds its own. The energy continues through the room, and the bar still offers a city view. Larger tables to the side give groups a little more privacy without cutting them off from what is happening nearby. There is enough atmosphere indoors to make the evening work when Chicago weather has other ideas.

Give the list a chance

Bangkok Jam is the order to try before defaulting to your usual. Tequila, lime and lemongrass come together in a bright, flavorful cocktail that feels transportive without making the drink unnecessarily complicated. It gives the creative side of the menu a persuasive introduction.

The Espresso Martini takes the more familiar route. Dark, classic and solidly executed, it suits someone who wants to stay with what works. It complements the occasion without becoming the reason to visit. Between the two, the menu gives a group room to explore or settle comfortably into a favorite.

Service is friendly and knowledgeable, but rushed. This is a busy room, and the staff move with it. Expect good guidance when you need it, with less time for the individual attention and leisurely conversation of a quieter hotel bar.

Let dinner be the next stop

The strongest plan is simple: reserve, arrive before dinner and give Z Bar a round or two. Allow an hour to an hour and a half, with another cocktail if everyone is enjoying the scene. There is no need to make the entire evening depend on it.

Chicago offers stronger options if an exceptional cocktail program or a destination rooftop view is the sole objective. Z Bar’s strength is the combination. You have a good drink, the city around you and a room that keeps drawing your attention. Enjoy that balance, then let dinner call you elsewhere.
